Serious art makes for serious fun in new picture book about Van Gogh
Vincent, Theo and the Fox is an adventure story for children inspired by the paintings of Vincent van Gogh. As young boys, Vincent and his brother Theo spy a mischievous fox sneaking into a farmer’s cart. Wanting to catch the furry creature, the brothers give chase through colorful fields, over land and sea, into the city and beyond – settings illustrated by over 30 full color reproductions of van Gogh’s greatest works. On this imaginative journey, the boys – and the fox – learn about failure, success, and discovering how to be the best you can be when you grow up. It is also a sweet story about brotherhood. An epilogue gives a brief, factual biography of van Gogh.
Reviews: The PictureBookReview.com wrote that Vincent, Theo and the Fox “…adds a depth of imagination that I’m not used to in picture books. I can’t think of any other picture book doing this — it’s wonderful!” The Washington Post said, “the colorful paintings jump off the pages and will give you a lot to think about….Macaluso includes information on each of the paintings….[He] wants to share the beauty of the art world with all kids….it’s cool. Very cool.”
Unique aspects: There are several children’s books on van Gogh. Vincent, Theo and the Fox is unique because it uses an adventure story to engage children with the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, features van Gogh’s actual paintings, and teaches about growing up and brotherhood as well as about van Gogh. This illustrated story book is a great way to open up the world of fine art to children.
About the author: Ted Macaluso is a research writer and editor who also loves storytelling. Vincent, Theo and the Fox – his first children’s book – combines his passions for adventure stories and art. He learned fiction writing at The Writer’s Center and, even more, from his young son, who always wanted Dad to make up “just one more” story. That son is now in college. Ted lives in Reston, Virginia with his lovely wife, kind-hearted dog, and frequently temperamental word processor. His second “Artist Adventures” book will be released in 2016.
